Why did Singapore merge with Malaya in 1963?
Merger was driven by four major pressures: the desire for full political independence, concerns about Singapore’s economic survival, hopes for a common market with Malaya, and fears over security and communist influence.
Together with Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak, Singapore became part of the new Federation of Malaysia on 16 September 1963.
Remember the four reasons: political independence, economic survival, common market and security.
