Explain why the Japanese carried out Operation Sook Ching. (6 marks)
One reason was to remove people whom the Japanese believed were anti-Japanese. The Japanese knew that many Chinese in Singapore had supported China during Japan’s invasion of China from 1937 by sending money and goods and by boycotting Japanese products. The Kempeitai therefore rounded up Chinese men aged 18 to 50 at screening centres to identify suspected opponents. As a result, this reduced potential opposition and strengthened Japanese control over Singapore. Therefore they carried out Operation Sook Ching to remove anti-Japanese suspects.
Another reason was to frighten the Chinese community into obeying the Japanese . Those who failed the screenings could be taken away and executed, and an estimated 25,000 to 50,000 Chinese were killed. Such harsh treatment created great fear among the population. As a result, many people became too afraid to oppose the Japanese because they feared arrest or death, allowing the Japanese to strengthen their control over Singapore. Therefore they carried out Operation Sook Ching to instill fear in the population.
