"The Treaty of Versailles was fair" How far do you agree with this statement? Explain your answer. (10m)
I agree to some extent that the Treaty of Versailles was fair.
Point: The treaty was fair because Germany had caused great destruction during WWI and the Allies wanted to prevent another war.
Evidence: Germany was seen as the main aggressor as it supported Austria-Hungary, invaded neutral Belgium, and used unrestricted submarine warfare. The treaty therefore reduced Germany’s army to 100,000 men, banned conscription, tanks and aircraft, and demilitarised the Rhineland.
Explain: This was fair from the Allies’ perspective because France had been invaded by Germany twice in 50 years and wanted security. Reparations were also understandable because France’s towns, farms and coal mines had been badly damaged and needed money to rebuild.
Link: Thus, the Treaty of Versailles can be seen as fair because it held Germany accountable and protected Europe from another German attack.
However, I disagree more because the Treaty of Versailles was too harsh and unfair to Germany.
Point: The treaty punished Germany too severely and created deep resentment among Germans.
Evidence: Germany was forced to accept full blame through the War Guilt Clause, pay £6.6 billion in reparations, lose 10% of its land and 12.5% of its population, and was not allowed to join the League of Nations. Explain: Germans saw this as unfair because they believed all countries shared blame for WWI, not Germany alone. They also hated the treaty because it was a diktat, meaning Germany had no say in the negotiations and was forced to sign. The harsh terms damaged German pride, weakened its economy, and later contributed to anger against the Weimar government and support for extremists like Hitler.
Link: Therefore, the Treaty of Versailles was unfair because it humiliated Germany and created long-term instability.
Conclusion: Overall, I agree only to a small extent. The treaty was fair in trying to punish Germany and protect the Allies after the destruction of WWI. However, it was more unfair because Germany was blamed too heavily, forced to accept harsh terms without negotiation, and made to suffer economically and politically. It would eventually cause so much resentment it will lead to the rise of extremist parties such as the Nazi party. Therefore, the Treaty of Versailles was not truly fair.
