Why did Germans turn against their own government after WWI?
In 1923, Germany's money became so worthless that families burned banknotes for warmth and a loaf of bread cost billions of marks. But hyperinflation didn't come out of nowhere.
It was the end of a chain that started with the Treaty of Versailles. Forced to pay huge reparations, Germany fell behind on payments, France and Belgium occupied the Ruhr to seize coal, and the German government printed money to pay striking workers.
In this short animated reel, we trace how humiliation became hardship, hardship became anger, and anger became opportunity for extremists like Hitler, who promised to tear up the Treaty and restore Germany's pride.
