Greetings, dear readers! Let me whisk you away to the sweltering heat and bustling activity of 19th century Singapore, where I, an Indian coolie, spend my days building roads and clearing swamps. If you're picturing a glamorous job, let me assure you, it's more mud than glamour.

My day begins with the first light of dawn, when even the roosters are still rubbing the sleep from their eyes. I join my fellow coolies at the site, where our task for the day awaits us - a stretch of land that's more swamp than road. It's a sight that would make even the bravest frog think twice.

As the sun climbs higher, so does the temperature. But there's no time for shade-seeking. We're like the lotus flowers of the labour world - thriving in the mud and blooming under the sun. And just like a lotus, we're best served with a side of sweat.

Lunchtime is a moment of respite. We gather around a pot of curry, sharing stories and laughter amidst the buzz of mosquitoes. It's these moments of camaraderie that make the hard work bearable. Plus, nothing beats a good curry to refuel your energy.

The afternoon sun is unforgiving, but so are we. We shovel mud, lay stones, and occasionally play a game of 'who can clear the most swamp'. Spoiler alert: I never win.

By the time the sun dips below the horizon, we're covered in more mud than the swamp. But there's a sense of satisfaction in seeing the newly built road and knowing that we've done a good day's work. Plus, the evening breeze is a sweet reward for our toil.

So there you have it, a day in the life of an Indian coolie in 19th century Singapore, building roads and clearing swamps. It's muddy, it's sweaty, but it's also filled with camaraderie and the satisfaction of a job well done. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a date with a pot of curry and a well-deserved rest.

Did coolies play an important role in the development of Singapore as a port city in the 19th century?

Yes, Hard work in challenging conditions to build infrastructure such as roads helped to facilitate trade and business in Singapore.
